Indiana Hall of Fame Journalist William Miller Herschell (author of the poem, "Ain't God Good to Indiana?") wrote a spectacular feature story on the Cobe Trophy with a complete description of the public roads course over which the race took place.

While researching the evolution of motorsport and the automobile itself one thing becomes apparent: what a different world we live in from the early days of the 20th Century. When you consider how treacherous the early roads were - craggy and rutted, a quagmire during wet weather - even the most skilled drivers would be challenged. In the United States this was particularly problematic as the still young country did not have the benefit of centuries of infrastructure development found in Europe.

While researching I occasionally stumble across some very interesting if obscure personalities. While writing about the 1909 Cobe Trophy I found the name of Fred Wiseman who drove for Stoddard-Dayton during that race weekend, June 18 - 19, 1909. Race driver, aviator apparently Wiseman did not know how to slow down.

Recently I have been researching the June 1909 Cobe Trophy and its support race the Indiana Trophy but poring over digitized copies of microfilm I spent weeks collecting earlier this year. One of the things I like doing is capturing images of the photographs that were published in these old newspapers - in this case the Indianapolis Star, the Indianapolis News and the Indianapolis Sun. I refer to these as "images" to make the distinction between what they are as opposed to the original photographs. They are like fossils, artifacts of something that in many cases no longer exists.

Check out my latest post on the sterling silver Cobe Trophy created back in 1909 for the Cobe Trophy race. It's wonderful this magnificent sculpture survives today and is occasionally displayed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.
