Image of The Week
This image is derived from a photograph that was published in the Indianapolis Star on June 13, 1909, just six days prior to the running of the first major auto race ever conducted in Indiana, the Ira Cobe Trophy won by Louis Chevrolet. Inspired by a Grecian urn it stood 39.5 inches tall including the base which was a layer of ebony wood with a marble slab on top of it. Without the base, the trophy, made of silver, stood 30 inches. This beautiful trophy is owned by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum and is occasionally on display there.
