Alternative Energy

My reflections on history help me to imagine a better future. People forget that automotive pioneers were at the height of high technology. Primitive by today's standards, their work was breakthrough in its day. If those people were born 100 years later, many would be focused on one of the great opportunities of this century - alternative energy. Unfortunately, when the topic comes up it is frequently equated with climate change, resulting in an emotional debate about the validity of global warming and the images of tree-huggers.

I came across this link posted to the Yahoo Auto Racing History Group and thought I'd share. Anyone interested in vintage photos from classic (1915 - 1930) GP racing in Europe will enjoy it. There are over 600 images in this collection.

Just for fun, here's the original trailer to the 1932 movie, "The Crowd Roars," starring James Cagney and Joan Blondell. Like most racing movies the writing is mediocre, the plot contrived and thin and tremendous liberties are taken with plausibility - if you know anything about the sport. The great thing about these movies is that they incorporated newsreel clips of actual races. You get the opportunity to see a number of the drivers of the era, many of them with brief speaking parts.

I came across this YouTube video of the 1937 Sir Malcolm Campbell Trophy at the Brooklands track in England. It is interesting to see this historic track in its full glory. The film quality is what it is for 1937. The track was shut down in 1939 due to World War II and was never completely restored. Fortunately, portions of it remain, including a test hill where vintage vehicle time trial climbs are still conducted.

For anyone who appreciates auto racing history, the buzz these days is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's centennial celebration. It's interesting to look back just 50 years and how the Speedway handled that milestone. Below is a video of a homemade 8 Milimeter film captured by a fan in stand A.

I've pulled together a nice package on the first French Grand Prix held in 1906. I have two great articles, one from The Motor World and the other from Motor Age, plus well crafted video you can see below. This video has excellent footage - borderline amazing, actually, considering the age of the film. The race had several story lines.

I just added content on the 1905 James Gordon Bennett Cup. Frenchman Leon Thery won his second Bennett Cup in the last race for that prize. The French, upset over the Cup race's restrictions on the number of cars allowed from each nation, decided to start their own race, the French Grand Prix in 1906.

I came across this very brief video of what is claimed to be one of the Buick "Bug" racers that William Durant's team raced in 1910. The drivers were Louis Chevrolet and Bob Burman. Who knows if cars like this are truly authentic or largely fabricated. Either way, the machine has historical value.

If you have about a half hour, kick back and watch this film of highlights from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway back in 1941. It is an interesting mix of practice highlights, some footage of the victory dinner - with drivers receiving checks and the Borg-Warner Trophy in the background - and race day coverage. There is footage from the race day morning garage area fire that I have never seen before. Track manager T.E. "Pop" Meyers is alive again and quite active in the pit area.

I just uploaded a photo of a scale model of the movie set for the upcoming movie about the first Indianapolis 500. It's worth a click, trust me.
