The Buick Bug

09/26/2009

I came across this very brief video of what is claimed to be one of the Buick "Bug" racers that William Durant's team raced in 1910. The drivers were Louis Chevrolet and Bob Burman. Who knows if cars like this are truly authentic or largely fabricated. Either way, the machine has historical value. This is possibly the same car Chevrolet wrecked on June 29, 1910 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in one of the more amazing escapes from death or serious injury during the era. Chevrolet literally dove under the hood, which he explained, was reinforced with a sturdy steel band just for such occasions. In essence, it was a primitive roll bar. You can obtain a copy of my profile of Louis Chevrolet by purchasing the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's 2009 Allstate 400 program.
