This is a neat little video capturing some images of Louis Chevrolet winning the 100-mile Harkness Trophy in 1917. The event took place on the board track at Sheepshead Bay, New York.

The art of WK Gilbert (Gilbert Art) was center stage at the May 2009 art show hosted by Carmel, Indiana's Art & Soul Gallery. Gilbert impressed onlookers by creating art "real time," depicting the beautiful street scene of this bedroom community north of Indianapolis.

This video is a brief look at the 1916 Indianapolis 500, which wasn't a 500 mile race. This edition of the "Memorial Day Classic" was the only one planned to be shorter than 500 miles as it was scheduled as a 300-miler. A number of factors were at work in making this decision, not the least of which was the raging war in Europe which limited entries from manufacturers located there. The field was the smallest in the historic race's history at just 21 cars.

I came across this video on YouTube a while back and based on its mix of heartfelt music, a professional voice over, compelling photos and some really, really terrible research I wanted to comment. The overall tone of the piece carries a lot of truth about motorcycle board track racing in America in the first quarter of the 20th century but the specifics are astoundingly inaccurate.

The careers of the Chevrolet brothers were steeped with some amazing accomplishments in otherwise fairly tragic lives.

I recognize this video as an excerpt from the History Channel's "Roaring Through the Century, the Indianapolis 500." This  segment focuses on the first Indianapolis 500 and offers some of the most creative packaging of the various videos focusing on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Produced by TelX in 1997, it offers footage many people have never seen.

Here's some fun stuff for today. What you find here are two music videos by contemporary Italian musicians Lucio Dalla and Sergio Bassi. Lucio is more up tempo and Sergio offers a folk ballad. You don't have to speak Italian to feel the sincerity.

Okay, so this is a little off topic from my usual theme, but hey, it's still racing, it's still the Indy 500. Somebody with a great sense of humor put this YouTube video together. If you love the Indianapolis 500, you will get a kick out this one...

I've invested some effort in creating summaries of the articles I have on the 1909 motorcycle race meet at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I've tried to organize them with the source and date in the first line of the summary. I think I'm safe in saying this is the world's largest archive of primary research on this topic. Check it out.

The picture below is of Charles "Fearless" Balke, one of the stars of American motorcycle racing in the pioneer era. Like many, his life was cut short by a tragic accident in 1914. In a touching story his young wife Edith - they were both in the early twenties- chronicled his career in a scrapbook. Amazingly, that scrapbook survived an extended stay in the attic of Edith's nephew, who passed away in 2004.
