Wayne Petersen, a great-nephew of Barney Oldfield's wife, is always on the lookout for auto racing memorabilia from the age of the pioneers. He tagged this short silent film (embedded below) from 1913 on early auto racing in Santa Monica, California for me. Two great drivers of the era are prominent in the film - Teddy Tetzlaff and Earl Cooper.

Taking a break from history, sort of. I came across this poll at the Indianapolis Star Web site asking people to predict the winner of the 2010 Indianapolis 500. I picked Scott Dixon and I am amazed at how few others did as well. Get this, more people picked Marco Andretti than Scott. All due respect to Marco, but let's get serious...

Karl Benz, the first automobile

The man credited with designing and constructing the first automoible is Germany's Karl Benz. While other motor driven carriages - such as those by Gottlieb Daimler - were also operating, the keep difference is that the Benz machine was purpose-built. That is, it was designed exclusively as a motor driven vehicle, not as a horse-drawn carriage.

I found a couple of links researchers and those who just enjoy immersing themselves in auto racing history should find both interesting and useful. One is a Web site dedicated to the history of the Long Island Motor Parkway in New York. A portion of the Long Island Motor Parkway was used in the design of the courses for the Vanderbilt Cup Races from 1908 through 1910. The photos of the remnants of the parkway are fascinating.

Check out this article on the work being done to produce replicas of every car that raced in the first Indianapolis 500. These new cars will be used in the filming of the movie about that historic race.

Also, the clip below is one I have used before. It is Corky Coker of Coker Tire Company, who is leading the effort to construct replicas of the racers.

Another great YouTube find - you can watch the entire Indianapolis 500 movie, "The Big Wheel" free of charge and with only one commercial on the front end. You can also watch it below from this embedded link from Internet Movie Database.

Amazing the stuff you can find on YouTube. This clip is purported to be a Thomas Edison film from 1900 - and possibly the first automobile parade in New York. Regardless of the particulars, this grainy piece of film is an interesting peek into the past to the automobile in its infancy.

The History of Motor Racing documentary broken into 16 segments on YouTube is an excellent film that I believe was created in the 1950's. I have referenced this before in previous blog posts. Although the one that appears below is a little outside the lines for First Super Speedway (pre-1920), I want to call it to your attention because it is excellent.

While working on a profile of Eddie Rickenbacker, I came across these incredible photos of him throughout his life and career on Flickr. Great history here, well work a few minutes. Also, my profile and the links embedded in it provide exhaustive coverage on this man's amazing life. If you know someone in need of a subject for a biographical term paper, this fills the bill!
