Image of The Week
Wayne Petersen, a great-nephew by marriage to Barney Oldfield, is pictured at The Henry Ford (Deerborn Museum) with Ford's "999" racer. This is the car that Barney Oldfield drove to victory over Alexander Winton in the Manufacturer's Challenge Cup in October 1902 at Grosse Pointe, Michigan's one-mile dirt horse track. Oldfield's success with this machine, which also included the first lap around a mile track in less than a minute, propelled him to prominence as America's first superstar of auto racing.
