Today marks the 93rd anniversary of the last William K. Vanderbilt Jr. Cup Race, America's first major auto race that began in 1904. Founded by its namesake as a sporting contest first and a commercial enterprise secondarily, this classic road race endured a tumultuous history. Born in Long Island, New York the contest was conducted on public roads, with courses ranging from 12.64 miles to 28.44 miles.

I try to update First Superspeedway every day, writing captions and article summaries or loading entirely new content. More and more, I link to relevant information elsewhere on the site or to resources I think are useful elsewhere on the Internet.

I came across another terrific set of photos from conceptcarz.com. These images are of the Buick "Bug" racer - allegedly the one "Wild" Bob Burman drove several victories in 1910. The sister car was driven by Louis Chevrolet who also enjoyed tremendous success.

I found a Web site with some interesting stuff, especially photos of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in days gone by. The site is managed by Dan Vielhaber, a gentleman I have never had the pleasure to meet. Some of the stuff on his site I have never seen before, such his photos of the 1935 Indianapolis 500.

One of my favorite sites for race car photos, Conceptcarz.com, has an excellent collection of photos of Ray Harroun's winning car from the first Indianapolis 500, the Marmon Wasp.

J. Walter Christie and his front wheel drive race car were the subjects of one of my blog posts earlier this week and I cited a Website that included a reasonable photo of Christie on his race car at the 1908 Minnesota State Fair.

This video is the fourth in a multi-part series on the history of auto racing and primarily focuses on the Indianapolis 500 from 1919 through 1921. The footage is absolutely fantastic, with several scenes of what would be unthinkable today - drivers and mechanics pushing disabled cars along the inside apron to get them back to their pits.

Today the IndyCar series announced their first series sponsor in many years. It's not often that IndyCar gets discussed on CNBC's "Power Lunch," but it happened today. Check it out.

I discovered a Web page presented by auto racing historian Don Stauffer that has some excellent copy and interesting photos of early track racing in Minnesota. Check out the photo of Webb Jay and his racer, Whistling Billy, as well as the J. Walter Christie's massive front wheel drive racer.

If you are not familiar with Conceptcaz.com,  do yourself a favor and check it out. Beautiful photography of cars, many of which are vintage machines dating back to the earliest years of automobiles and racing. One of my favorites from the early days is the Fiat S74 that was driven to victory in the 1911 American Grand Prize in Savannah, Georgia.
