One hundred years ago today the penultimate William K. Vanderbilt Jr. Cup race on Long Island, New York was ran. After 1910, the race was organized in other cities across the United States. This was the latest date any of the Vanderbilt Cup Races ran on Long Island. Complicating matters was unseasonably cold temperatures described by those on hand as "December-like." Evidence of this was that the water hoses in the pit area were frozen solid when race officials arrived in the morning.

I came across an interesting on-line magazine article by respected auto racing historian Karl Ludvigsen that describes the early racing history of Fiat in America. In light of the company's current relationship with Chrysler, America might be seeing a lot more of Fiat and premium brand Alfa-Romeo.

As I reflect on early auto racing history, I can't help but think about the history we create today. History just as far reaching, just as impactful as what shaped our world 100 to 115 years ago. Just for fun, here are two videos that juxtapose the automobile landscape yesterday and today. The first, which focuses on Henry Ford, offers interesting video of the man, his early cars and his legendary manufacturing process. The second is the intriguing Tesla roadster - a path forward or life on the bleeding edge?

I reached a milestone in my archive of primary research on the 1905 James Gordon Bennett Cup auto race. What I can offer now is not only the world's largest archive of primary research on this event, but a synopsis to help you understand the value of each 1905 newspaper article in the collection. Check it out.

This is a very interesting video about last year's centennial celebration of the 1908 French Grand Prix. The race was an embarrassment to the French as a German Mercedes won with German Benz cars taking second and third. The race pre-dated the 1926 merger of Mercedes and Benz. The video is a mix of current day images and those from 1908 as a host of restored vintage cars appeared on the scene.

Harry Knight was called the "hero of Indianapolis" after his quick thinking to save the life of mechanic Charlie Anderson in the first Indianapolis 500. Sadly, he lost his life just two years later in a Columbus, Ohio dirt track race. Read about this interesting young man here.

Barney Oldfield's world land speed record (131.720 mph) in March 1910 was more than a world land speed record - it was simply the fastest any person or animal had ever traveled throughout history. No airplane or train or any beast could attain that kind of speed at the time. The speed chart below was created to illustrate the amazing achievement. Read more.

Built in 1917, the Golden Submarine was one of the first complete cars constructed by the great Harry Miller, who built several Indianapolis 500 race winners in the 1920's and 1930's. The idea of the car came from Barney Oldfield, who was more safety conscious than is typically recognized by his biographers - probably the main reason he survived the deadly era that contained his career.
