The June 5, 1909 national championship balloon race hosted by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway had a field packed with talented competitors. This image is of Dr. D.H. Thompson, the pilot of the Ohio balloon. His assistant was W.E. Mast. The men competed in the handicap race ran the same day as the national championship.
