Much was made of the economic impact the first Indianapolis 500 brought to the city of Indianapolis 500. The estimate was $500,000, which seemed like big money back in 1911. The front page of the June 1, 1911 Indianapolis News carried an interesting and amusing editorial cartoon. The May 31 edition of the same paper offered more analysis in an article on the same subject.

Okay, I admit. I spent most of the day after church on the couch watching auto races and uploading new content on the first Indianapolis 500 to my this wonderful Web site I am so proud to work for. Check out the last page of my collection of articles on the 1911 Indianapolis Motor Speedway for definitive evidence of my endeavors. Also, enjoy this photo of second-place finisher, "Smiling" Ralph Mulford. One look and you will know instantly how he got that nickname.

I just loaded a very brief article that presents some interesting quotes from Ray Harroun shortly after winning the inaugural Indianapolis 500 on May 30, 1911. Harroun seems to contradict himself when he says that he never tired while leading the race, but that 500 miles was too great a distance to ever consider driving without relief. Harroun was spotted by relief driver Cyrus Patschke.

One of my latest additions is an Indianapolis News article from May 31, 1911 on how relief driver Cyrus Patschke helped Ray Harroun win the first Indianapolis 500 for the Marmon team.

A lot of people like to talk about the confusion over the finishing positions of the first Indianapolis 500. I think this is overblown as Harroun had a big advantage in that he did have much trouble with tire wear while second-place Ralph Mulford and most of the rest of the field did. Frequent pit stops and running around the brick track on a rim don't do much for your competitive edge.

My latest addition to the collection of articles about the first Indianapolis 500 is a mid-race report by the evening edition, the Indianapolis News for May 30, 1911.  No radio, no TVs, but three major dailies with both an morning and afternoon editions. This was the quickest way to find out about developments without witnessing them first hand. At this report Ray Harroun, the eventual winner of the first Indianapolis 500, was leading the race at 300 miles. The quality of the reproduction here is poor - but legible.

Wild Bob Burman set a new track world record for the mile at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 29, 1911. The previous record was set by Barney Oldfield in 1910. Both drivers used the same car - the famous "Blitzen" Benz. I just added an article package from the May 29, 1911 Indianapolis News (the evening edition) that tells the story plus a lot more.

I just uploaded a nice package of articles from the May 27, 1911 Indianapolis News that was developed to help Indianapolis Motor Speedway fans better follow the first Indianapolis 500. Speed record and entry list charts; a description of the first rolling start and the role of the pace car; information about the facilities; the placement of color-coded "number disks" on the cars and a description of Harry Cobe's near brush with the first turn wall during a practice spin are all included. Great color.
