It's July 4 and I felt patriotic today, so let's remember a war hero that was very much invested in the freedom of American citizens. Brits too.

A large percentage of the e-mails I receive asking for information centers on the biographies of the "other" three founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With three biographical books, there seems to be a good deal of information available about Carl Fisher, but much less so about Frank Wheeler, James Allison and Arthur C. Newby. I have secured good obituaries about each of these men, as well as other items I think you'll find interesting.

In 1910 the Indianapolis Motor Speedway planned to host a 24-hour race in August. Those plans were scuttled as Speedway reassessed the level of interest in their events during the season and the costs of promoting them. This brief article from July 1910 will fill you in.

I came across an article today about how Indianapolis Motor Speedway founder Carl Fisher considered allowing Jack Johnson, the first African-American heavyweight boxing champion, to run some exhibition laps around the Speedway at the September 1910 race meet. This triggered outrage in the racing community, with some threatening to boycott the Speedway.

I came across an article yesterday that proved very interesting. It was an item from July 1910 providing an update on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway management's plans  for a calendar of events for the 1911 season. Interestingly, they had not yet considered a 500-mile race yet, but were looking at another aviation show, a military exhibition, and, of all things, a gyroscope monorail. This is really interesting. Check it out.
