When most people read, write or talk about early auto racing, they marvel at the difference between those days and the current state of affairs. I do it. But it's also interesting to note the similarities: car control, the racing line, aerodynamics. A good example is an article I just uploaded to my site. The article discusses the race strategy of Pope-Hartford driver Louis Disbrow. His primary considerations? Track temperature and tire wear. There are some fundamentals that haven't changed...

My most recent upload is an amusing and unique article about "Wild" Bob Burman and how his astrological signs made him a favorite to win the first Indianapolis 500. There's an interesting image and graph of an astrological chart that illustrates how the planets were in alignment for Burman. This article was printed in the Indianapolis Star the day before the first Indianapolis 500 on May 29, 1911.

I just uploaded an article on the first driver's meeting ever conducted for the Indianapolis 500. It was held on the evening of May 27, 1911. Legendary officials such as Starter Fred Wagner (you can read his book on this site), Referee A.R.

Today I posted an article that describes the final day of practice before the first Indianapolis 500 time trials. These time trials were not for position, but simply to meet minimum speed requirements. Only two cars failed to meet the standard of reaching 75 miles per hour down a portion of the home stretch. Starting order was determined by the order of when entry forms were filed.

I just uploaded a neat article complete with decent image concerning driver Joe Horan's May 24, 1911 practice wreck at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The car he drove was the Amplex #12, the same machine replacement driver Art Greiner would also crash early in the first Indianapolis 500. That accident produced the race's only fatal injury, which involved riding mechanic Samuel Dickson (pictured).

I just uploaded three articles about practice for the first Indianapolis 500. They describe some intense action with big name stars of the day cutting fast laps: David Bruce-Brown, Ralph Mulford, Caleb Bragg, Lewis Strang and Fred Belcher whose POV on the race is the subject of a new book. Reading this stuff really puts you at the Brickyard on May 23, 1911.

I was deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of Henry Surtees, the son of 1964 Formula One World Champion, John Surtees, OBE. I interviewed John for an article in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's 2008 MotoGP program one year ago. John was most helpful and pleasant to speak with. He encouraged me to call on him in the future if he could be of service to me. That interaction somehow makes the tragedy of his 18-year-old son's death all the more real for me.

In uploading more articles for my 1911 Indianapolis 500 series, I came across an item on "Farmer" Bill Endicott concerning a race he was competing in on May 13, 1911 at Latonia near Cincinnati. It provides interesting insights to his character and ability to think on his feet under pressure. When involved in a multi-car pile-up he sprung into action to warn other drivers before they plunged into the wreckage.

Recently I have been doing research on the old days of motorcycle racing on board tracks. This history is not nearly as well documented as auto racing history, and what is on the Internet is pretty shaky. Bottom line, my advice is not to trust anything. The one exception is an excellent site created by Daniel Statnekov called, "American Vintage Motorcycles." Excellent, well-researched information. Daniel is a very pleasant and knowledgeable fellow who encourages and shares with other historians.

Even though Louis Chevrolet had retired as an auto racing driver in 1911, the racing bug got to him when he realized how important the first Indianapolis 500 would inevitably be.

"I guess that gasoline odor hypnotizes me, and I know the sound of the old Buick motors calls louder than anything else I ever heard," Chevrolet said in expressing his desire to serve as a relief driver for the Buick team in the first Indianapolis 500.
