Barney Oldfield constantly looked for ways to exploit his personal brand: the speed-crazed, death-defying daredevil. He pursued a stage career with the Broadway production, "The Vanderbilt Cup," and then latter appearing in such Hollywood silent films as "Barney Oldfield's Race for Life." I would have embedded the code for this YouTube video but the rights holder has disabled that fuction.

Just after the New Year in 1909, January 3 to be exact, the Indianapolis Star published the attached article concerning gun control. While there were no assault weapons aside from Gatling guns the focus was on the ready availability of easily concealed pistols. The logic of this argument was that if such lethal weapons were not so readily available many of the murders of the time would not have been commited. Specific examples of such crimes that had occurred recently are cited.

There is no city more a part of - and more defined by - auto racing than Indianapolis. The history of the city is inextricably interwoven with motorsport and for First Super Speedway investigating and understanding the history of Indianapolis is essential to piecing together the full picture of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and auto racing in general - a mission of this Web site. For this reason select articles relevant to Indianapolis history will be included in the blog portion of First Super Speedway.

The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake is a legendary disaster that provided a major test - and opportunity - for the automobile to prove it's usefulness to society. Imagine the wonder over the power of 30, 40, 50 horses or more in a world that had previously thought of what a single horse could do. While teams of horses or mules stilled played crucial roles, the cars and trucks demonstrated their ability to consolidate horsepower into a compact vehicle that haul debris, dislodge great masses and transport the wounded. A landmark event for the automobile.

I assume this was a hoax or at least the dream of some impractical "inventor" but whatever happened to the carbonic gas engine car? This from an August 1908 issue of Motor Age.
