IMS Program For May 31, 1910

This attachment contains an article which orginally appeared in the May 29, 1910 Indianapolis Star. The article spells out the event card for Memorial Day (May 30) at the May 1910 race meet at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The May 1910 race meet weekend included "national championships," a newly-announced distinction by the American Automobile Association (AAA) for select race meets. Car manufacturers were keen to make a great showing. Check out other articles that provide additional summaries on the results of the races staged May 27 and May 28 elsewhere on First Super Speedway.

Since this article is not so much a narrative as a detailed list it is simply summarized here. This will be useful to you as the digital attachment quality leaves much to be desired. Check out the American Automobile Association (AAA) 1910 rules for classes of race cars for context specific to each event. Also note that this was the big day of the national championship races and for whatever reason the AAA and Speedway management scheduled short distance sprint races of five to ten miles. The only race of significant distance was what had to be considered the day's feature, the 50-mile Remy Brassard and Trophy.

  • Pope Hartford, Frank Fox
  • Jackson, Scheifier
  • Great Western, Tom Kincaid (I want to flag this because Kincaid was a National driver, but other sources corroborate that he did drive for this manufacturer in this event. It may be that National did not have a model that complied with the rules of this class.)
  • Marion, Tinkler
  • Marion, Gil Andersen
  • Warren-Detroit, Miller
  • Marmon, Ray Harroun

Event 14, stock cars, Class E, John A. Wilson Trophy worth $150 donated by John A. Wilson of Franklin, Pennsylvania. This event awarded the trophy to the stock touring car first to complete one mile in one minute or less under regular towing conditions and carrying four passengers. The contest was restricted to cars with not more than 50 HP based on the Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers (ALAM) rating. The cars were required to use regular touring bodies not baby tonneau or torpedo bodies and fuel tanks were required to be full. The cars had to carry tops but they could be down. Mud guards, tool kits were required with four passengers each weighing at least 160 pounds. All passengers were required to sit upright. The run was for a mile down the track and then back up.
