When I posted the article about Ray Harroun's victory in a 1910 auto race held on the famous Churchill Downs horse track I received an incredible number of comments. Apparently, others shared my interest and surprise that auto races took place on such hallowed grounds for horse racing. A truly tragic moment occurred at one such race at Pimlico in June, 1908.

Deep trivia time. John Newby, the father of Indianapolis Motor Speedway founder Arthur C. Newby, suffered a fatal stroke while attending the May 1910 race meet at the Speedway. John was born in 1840 in North Carolina and moved to Indiana where son Arthur was born in 1865. The family moved to Kansas where they spent 12 years there before returning to Indiana. From John's obituary, note that his daughter was Mrs. Bruce M. Wylie, 3119 North Illinois Street. This is who Arthur was living with when he passed away September 11, 1933.

Brian Pratt of the Yahoo Auto Racing History Group flagged this great find of a 1913 movie featuring early auto racing greats Teddy Tetzlaff and Earl Cooper. It's a farce and even showcases the early film comedian Fatty Arbuckle who plays a race official who ends up literally getting his butt kicked.

Here's the details:

Most people are not aware that Indianapolis hosted a huge auto show from March 27 through April 2 1910. This show was organized by the leaders of the automobile industry, especially those in Indianapolis that included such companies as Marmon, Marion, Premier and Empire.

No shock, May is a special month for me. This is a special time with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway centennial underway. The printed, magazine-style programs the graphic services team at the Speedway produces are the best in the business, the best, I believe in all sports. This year's program is exceptional with the centennial celebration of the founding of the Speedway in 1909.

Over the weekend I loaded the latest collection of articles about the early days of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This package covers the Speedway's July 1910 race meet. This was a turning point for the Speedway when management realized they needed to look at a different entertainment proposition as they saw precipitous declines in attendance. The races were controversial too, as the Buick team dominated only to be disqualified before the month was out over violations of stock car regulations.

First, I want to take a moment to just say "thanks" to everyone who has commented on my site or contacted me with compliments. It means a lot that First Super Speedway makes your work easier or just satisfies your curiosity. Frankly, I'm a little surprised by the attention. I'm particularly surprised by the number of e-mails from France and the UK, but also I'm pleased there is so much interest in American racing history in those countries. What's more, I'm impressed - maybe blown away - by how many other people find Barney Oldfield to be the fascinating a character I do.

When I first started researching pre-WWI auto racing history several years ago, I came across this picture (at the bottom of this post) in a microfilm record of Horseless Age and it really caught my eye. The car was so sleek, so lightweight, it was a huge departure from the big, blunt, brutish race cars you typically see in photos of the era.

I knew the late Don Radbruch as a great contributor on the Yahoo Auto Racing History Group. He was the first to welcome me when I joined the group and encouraged my interest in pre-World War I auto racing. Unsolicited, he sent me this collection of photos and helped provide the identification of the persons and cars involved.

I have received so many wonderful comments about FirstSuperSpeedway.com, and I'm very grateful for so much positive feedback. I want to take the time to recognize a couple of sites that I have tremendous respect for as I use them frequently in my research. One is Champ Car Statistics and the other is Darren Galpin's pre-World War I content, which is part of a larger site.
