I was watching the IndyCar qualifying for Texas this morning (DVR recording from last night) and something Robbie Buhl said reminded me of an observation I have held for years. Buhl talked about "putting a car in the fence." The reference to the SAFER barrier being a fence may sound witty, but it is a hand-me-down phrase dating back to the earliest days of auto racing. the horse track became the venue of choice in America where public roads were deplorable and rare.

Boy does time fly! Today marks the 100th anniversary of the national championship balloon race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway - the first competitive event at the Brickyard. Historian Donald Davidson writes about it on the IMS Web site.

As a complement to the video featured on my home page, I thought it appropriate to call attention to the two articles I have archived on the first French Grand Prix in 1906. As noted in the video it was a brutally hot affair and the tar used on the roads to hold crushed stones in place melted. The toxic chemicals in the adhesive carried by the billowing clouds of dust kicked up burned the drivers eyes and made them nauseous. This first French GP was the first Grand Prix, period.

I'm finally changing the featured video clip on the my site, but I thought I'd post the Marmon Wasp 3-D graphic as a reference point. I just like the simplicity and elegance of this thing.

In posting articles about the September 1910 race meet at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I came across a small item on Ray Harroun riding in Carl Fisher's balloon, the "Indiana." Harroun, like many of the early racers, was fascinated by aviation and at the time ballooning was a big part of the scene. At one point in his career Harroun designed aircraft and served as a flight instructor. I enjoy presenting material that presents these multi-dimensional characters in a different light.

If you have ever wondered when Carl Fisher and the management team at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway first announced their intentions to stage their once-a-year spectacular, the Indianapolis 500 Mile International Sweepstakes, check out my article of the week, just published today. This article comes in the days following the Speedway's September (Labor Day weekend) race meet in 1910. So, the announcement came about eight months in advance.

Here's another shot from my trip last week to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Indy 500. This car is such a neat story and you can read the details in my photo gallery. Bottom line, this was a white elephant that Indianapolis Motor Speedway founder Carl Fisher commissioned to tackle the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup, at that time the biggest race in America. With patriotic flair, Fisher dreamed of getting the best of the world conquering European teams but he didn't make it to tech inspection.

I'm back from the Indianapolis 500 and very pleased with my visit. My wife and I drove up from Cary, North Carolina and arrived in Indiana May 18. It was great to catch up with some old friends, including one of my heros, Donald Davidson (pictured sitting with me at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum), the chief historian of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The beautiful weather the entire week made our stay exceptionally enjoyable. After the race, it is always amusing to me to hear people critique it and assess it as "good" or otherwise. Here's the deal.

I thought I'd share a few links that I have found very useful in motor sport historical writing. The first is called "Gazza," and, among many things, they have a handy Time/Speed/Distance calculator. Another is "Measuring Worth," which calculates the value of money in the United States (or colonies) from the 1600's into the 21st Century.

I'm in Indianapolis now eagerly awaiting Sunday's Indianapolis 500 mile race and always people turn their attention to the possibility of rain. Back in 1905 protests against auto racing reached such a fever pitch men who billed themselves as rainmakers marketed their services to churches and activist groups to prevent auto races from taking place in their community. One such character was Ned Broadwell. He visited a number of tracks in the Midwest in his attempt to spoil auto race meets.
