Donald Davidson, the chief historian of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, produced throughout 2009 a blog (no longer available on the IMS Web site) to chronicle the 100th anniversary of the first year of the Speedway's operations.

Ken Parrotte, a major league auto racing history aficionado, contacted me and, among other things, flagged a marvelous on-line research resource. This is a collection of New York newspapers (they claim a total of 11,266,000 newspaper pages) dating back over 100 years. The man who pulled this database-driven site is not an auto racing buff, but a general history enthusiast. However, if you search for keywords related to auto racing, a lot of stuff will pop up. This is now bookmarked in my browser!

I have developed a synopsis for each article in my nice collection of content about or relevant to Barney Oldfield's world land speed records at Daytona Beach in March 1910. This collection includes a number of informative images and descriptions of different aspects of Oldfield's milestone accomplishment.

More from the Yahoo Auto Racing History Group, a nice link to articles and photos focused on the early racing history of the National Motor Vehicle Company.

Well the Yahoo Auto Racing History Group has done it again, identifying two free sites for auto racing photography. These are Northwest Speedshots and Road Racers Reunion. Both offer shots of unique cars most people have forgotten or never knew existed. Enjoy!

A Web site created by photographer Ken Coles was highlighted on the Yahoo Auto Racing History Group. I can safely say this is one of the most impressive collections of American auto racing photography (circa 1950-1980) available anywhere.

I came across an interesting article about Barney Oldfield selling his race team to Ernie Moross in 1910. If you are curious about either of these men this is something you want to read.

Check out my latest discussion of an article from 1910 that describes Barney Oldfield's auto racing career up to that point. You could right a resume from this biographical sketch that I pulled from Oldfield's personal scrapbook.

I came across this clip from Speedway Motors on YouTube. What you'll see is an incredible collection of race cars, race engines and a huge inventory of auto racing memorabilia. All of this began with the vision of a 14 year old boy now known as "Speedy" Bill Smith, who is interviewed in this piece. This is just one more reason to visit Lincoln, Nebraska!
