One of Indianapolis Motor Speedway founder Carl Fisher's many great accomplishments was to lead the development of America's first transcontinental highway, "The Lincoln Highway." Ground breaking occurred in 1915 with the help of other leading lights in the automobile industry such

No political commentary from First Super Speedway here. But I came across this video excerpt from political commentator Glenn Beck of Fox News. He gives a little history lesson - with a heaping dose of his perspective on the wisdom of corporate bailouts - on America's early automobile industry. Agree or not, I always like it when people apply history to current challenges - far too rare an occurrence.

I came across this site by a book author and photographer. I haven't read the book, but it looks intriguing. The site is one to watch as the owner is still fleshing it out but could prove to be a good source of photography.

Auto racing enthusiast Jameson Champaigne flagged this interesting - and very unusual - silent video. Allegedly it is a film of Henry Ford demonstrating a pretty amazing mechanical wonder - a snow tractor! Growing up in Indianapolis, I can think of many a winter day this contraption would have come in handy. I would most surely been king of the road.

William F. Nolan, biographer of Barney Oldfield wrote a remembrance of the legendary driver's stirring drive in the 1914 Cactus Derby. I came across it in a Google search and decided to share.

Belgian motor sports historian and event production manager Ivo Braeken contacted me earlier this week to share plans for his team's upcoming rally for pre-1930s automobiles, motor cycles and steam vehicles. The event is staged in the mountainous  Ardennes region of Belgium, an area with tons of motor racing history.

The Giant's Despair Hill Climb may be the oldest running such auto competition in the United States. Established in 1906, the event is currently sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and boasts a great history. I recently commented on an article on this site that provides the results of the Giant's Despair Hill Climb run in 1910.

Just 136 years ago today Carl Graham Fisher, the leader of the founding team at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was born in Greensburg, Indiana. The son of an alcoholic father who essentially left his wife to raise their three sons with little means, there was nothing about Carl's upbringing that portended the influential role he would have in shaping America during the first quarter of the 20th century.

Yesterday I mentioned Donald Davidson's excellent blog timeline celebrating the events in 1909 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This is essentially a wonderful digest of the news reporting that went on during year focused on the new Speedway.

Some highlights (many of these have links to content on First Super Speedway directly relevant to the timeline):
