We talk about racing vesatility today. Check out 1970's when the USAC championship offered paved ovals, road courses and dirt tracks. No wonder people today marvel at how incredibly talented the drivers of those days were. They were thoroughly tested.

Hemmings published this interesting article about Lewis Strang, who started on the pole for the first Indy 500. The article has problems, such as the view that Strang won the pole for the 1911 Indy 500. This is incorrect. Strang was assigned the pole by virtue of being the first car entered in the big race.
