A contemporary of Barney Oldfield, Lincoln Beachey was not only an entertaining aviator but demostrated the possibilities of airplanes and the design required to realize their potential. I came across this interesting book and Web site dedicated to his life.

Betty Blythe was a society and women's interest reporter at the Indianapolis Star in 1909. She became the first woman to circle the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a race car during practice for the very first races at the track. Her story is compeling reporting and provides wonderful insights to the sensations of being in the cockpit of an early race car at speed. Her driver was as good as they came: "Wild" Bob Burman.

To quote the local newspaper the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was "christened with blood" when on the first day of auto races two men, driver William Bourque and riding mechanic Harry Holcomb, lost their lives. This particular photo shows Speedway attendants carrying the dead body of Holcomb across the track in the middle of a race as cars speed by.

Click through to a rich array of information about this incredible day of history-making auto racing.

This is the kind of photo I don't think you would see on the front page of a major metro paper today, but that is not to say that news coverage has become less graphic over the years. It's something to ponder. Regardless it is dramatic as we see the last few seconds of the life of the first driver to die from an accident at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sadly, the incident occurred on the very first day of racing at the storied track.

The very first day of auto racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway produced the track's first fatalities. Driver Wiliam Bourque and riding mechanic Harry Holcomb lost their lives in the meet's feature race of the day, the Prest-O-Lite 250 miler.

Doing thorough research sure does reveal some interesting information. Until recently I had never heard of W. Guy Wall who designed the winning National race car from the 1912 Indianapolis 500. If you know more, please fill me in.

From my current research I am learning a lot about the community of leaders in the world of motorized transportation and motor sports especially those based in the indianapolis are. You can get to know something about a lot of them through some of the information recently uploaded to First Super Speedway.

I did a summary of Indianapolis Motor Speedway Founder Carl Gaham Fisher's career yesterday that included an old portrait image I rescued from microfilm. I think you will find this a tidy distillation of the man's life complete with links that will connect you to a wealth of information about this accomplished man.

I am now working on research I have gathered about the 1909 Glidden Tour. As a result I stumbled across this amazing site with lots of pictures from a fabulous pioneer photographer of the day - Nathan Lazarnick. Lazarnick, a Russian immigrant, shot over 1700 photos of that long endurance journey. Learn more about him, the 1909 Glidden Tour and check out his work.
