Final Leg: Prescott to Phoenix

Another item from Barney Oldfield's personal scrapbook, the origin of this article is unknown because the name of the publication was snipped from the clipping. The article describes the start of the final leg of the 696-mile 1914 Los Angeles to Phoenix "Cactus Derby." This last day of the three-day grind started in Prescott, Arizona, where the racers had spent the night. A colorful account of driver Olin Davis' mechanical failure in his Simplex racer at Copper Basin Hill near Skull Valley paints a picture of the challenges all the competitors endured. A table of the standings of the drivers, complete with times for the two legs with elapsed time as well, the names of their riding mechanics and make of car provides any researcher an outstanding source of information.
