Image of The Week
A classic example of Barney Oldfield's showmanship was his decision to name his National Motor Vehicle Company race car for the 1909 racing season "Old Glory." Adorned with an American flag paint job design over the engine cowling the car was clearly a statement. This image accompanied an article that was published in the June 25, 1909, Indianapolis Star. Oldfield created a lot of news in Indianapolis when he decided to campaign one of the city's homegrown automobile manufacturer's products in 1909.
Another photograph of the "Old Glory" National was published in the July 3, 1909, Indianapolis News.
