This photo was published in the Indianapolis News on June 1, 1909 and is of Mrs. Charles A. Coey who became the first woman to ascend from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a balloon. Check this article elswhere on First Super Speedway for details. Mrs. Coey, who was a recently married, was popular with the local newspapers and frequently mentioned in their articles. Coey's first wife (pictured here) was Carrie Hume Lewis. Interestingly, after Carrie passed away, he married Kathleen Bumbaugh, the daughter of balloonist George Bumbaugh who designed and built balloons for Coey. One was even named after Kathleen who was a teen at the time of the Speedway's balloon championship in 1909. There is more info on Charles Coey.
