Image of The Week
This image appeared in the July 30, 1909 Indianapolis News and reports the entry of local rider Johnny Merz in the upcoming Federation of American Motorcyclists (FAM) race meet at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The original caption associated with the photograph read as follows:
"A rider who is expected to do things in the motorcycle meet at the new motor speedway August 13 and 14 is Johnny Merz. He will ride as an amateur in every event for motorcycles of sixty-one cubic inch piston displacement. He has been riding for about six years. His mount in all races he is entered in will be a seven-horsepower chain-driven Thor. Merz probably has more experience than any other rider in Indianapolis."
