Barney Oldfield leads William K. Vanderbilt Jr. in their only head-to-head match-up. The photo was taken January 28, 1904 during the competition mile event at beach races of Ormond-Daytona. Oldfield won the contest and set a new competition mile record at 83.7 MPH. Oldfield drove an American-built Winton "Bullet No. 2" race car from the Winton Motor Carriage Company while Vanderbilt drove a German Mercedes.
