Spencer Wishart

Spencer Wishart was a charismatic, young, blazingly-fast driver who burst on the racing scene in 1908. The son of millionaire Wall Street financier George WishartSpencer purchased a Mercedes to get started racing but by 1912 was hired by the Mercer team. He finished fourth in the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911 and second in the 1913 race. He was killed at Elgin in 1914 while leading that year's edition of the road racing classic. This is a rare image of this talented driver.

Spencer's sister, Mary, wed 1916 Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Resta, who also lost his life at the wheel of a race car.
