Ralph DePalma

This is another image from the Paul Sheedy collection, where we see 1915 Indianapolis 500 champion Ralph DePalma. Sheedy's margin notes indicate that the photo was captured at Atlantic City Speedway in May of 1926. The wood-plank track began operating that year and Harry Hartz won the inaugural event. Hartz went on to be AAA national champion in 1926. 
 
Also note in the margin that DePalma is referred to as, "The Wop." This was not a derogatory slur, but a term of endearment that would likely be frowned on today.
