Louis Chevrolet burst onto the American racing scene as a driver in 1905. For the previous two seasons Barney Oldfield had established himself as the undisputed king of dirt oval track racing. Chevrolet, a Franco-Swiss immigrant by way of Canada drove a 90 HP Fiat that gave him a huge advantage over Oldfield in his 60 HP Peerless Green Dragon. The previously unknown Chevrolet's sudden success inspired much conversation in the paddock. As you can imagine, much of it frustrated Oldfield.
