Image of The Week
This is another great perspective piece of the Blitzen Benz from artist David Story. It is a tribute to the success of Barney Oldfield in establishing new speed records with the famous Blitzen Benz racer. He had startled the world by setting new world speed records at Daytona Beach in March 1910. There he exceeded 131 MPH in the measured mile. Oldfield had acquired the Blitzen Benz, renaming it the "Lightning Benz" with the goal of reviving his career.
Oldfield appeared at the Brickyard for the May 1910 Memorial Day Weekend race meet - the first race meet since the brick paving project was completed. Oldfield earned yet another opportunity to write auto racing history when he set the American track record for the distance of one mile.
