The June 5, 1909 national championship balloon race hosted by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the epicenter of the aviation world that weekend. The event drew top drawer competitors and attracted the most respected aviation-related officials in the country. Among them was Major H.B. Hersey of the United States Government Weather Bureau. This image appeared in the June 4, 1909 Indianapolis Star.
