Lewis & Lockhart Battle - 1926

This dramatic shot shows Dave Lewis (7) leading Frank Lockhart on his way to winning a 25-mile race at the Charlotte Speedway board track. It was November 11, 1926, and this event was one of three contests that day. The great Harry Miller (Lewis' brother-in-law) constructed the winning Miller race car.

While Lockhart was a phenom best known for dominating the 1926 Indianapolis 500, Lewis had a longer and very interesting career. He was a veteran of four "500s" with a best result of runnerup in 1925 with the help of relief driver Bennett Hill. It is worth noting that his first "500" was in 1916 but he did not return until nine years earlier. He lost his life in 1928 not in a racing accident, but by suicide after a brushfire destroyed his ranch.
