Joe Boyer Accident

This is a tough photo of a category we normally would not publish, but it is historically significant and amazing at the same time. Here we see the tragic fatal accident of  Joe Boyer, champion of the 1924 Indianapolis 500. Given the technology of cameras of the era, this image was captured through great skill and, for the photographer, a healthy dose of luck. The accident occurred at the Altoona board track on September 1, 1924.
 
The 1924 Indianapolis 500 is known as the first of two "500's" with co-winning drivers. Lora L. Corum started the race in the car but was replaced by the team's star driver, Joe Boyer, after the latter's car failed. The other co-winners were Mauri Rose and Floyd Davis in 1941.
