Image of The Week
Thanks to auto racing history researcher Ken Parrotte we can present this historic photo from the 1945 contract signing for Tony Hulman to purchase the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Pictured from left to right (front row) are Tony Hulman, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Wilbur Shaw. Behind them are T.E. "Pop" Myers and Joe Cloutier who was slated to take on the role of treasurer for the company.
The cutline for the photo read as folliows - "The historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway became Indiana-owned exclusively yesterday for the first time since Carl G. Fisher and other founders relinquished control 18 years ago. Shown looking over final papers in the transaction by which Anton Hulnan Jr. of Terre Haute and his associates aquired the racing property from Capt. Eddie V. Rickenbacker in the Indianapolis Athletic Club are (left to right, seated) Mr. Hulman, new chairman of the board; Capt. Rickenbacker, who sold all interests in the track, and Wilbur Shaw, three-time Speedway winner, who will be president of the new corporation, and (left to right, rear) Theodore E. (Pop) Meyers, who remains as vice-president, and J.R. Cloutier of Terre Haute, treasurer of the new corporation."
