Image of The Week
Here's another image from the Paul Sheedy collection. What you see here is Indianapolis 500 veteran Earl DeVore at the Altoona, PA board track speedway June 12, 1926. Sheedy recorded that the car was owned by Frank Cramer and was dubbed the Altoona Special. The winner of that race was Dave Lewis.
Despite his three Indianapolis 500 drives, DeVore is most noted for losing his life in the shipwreck of the SS Vestris in November 1928. DeVore was traveling with another Indianapolis 500 veteran, Norman Batten and their wives. Mrs. DeVore and Mrs. Batten survived, but both their husbands lost their lives. DeVore's son, Billy Devore, was also aboard the ship and survived. He competed in seven Indianapolis 500-Mile Races from 1937 through 1948.
