Image of The Week
This image of one of Buick's star race drivers, Louis Chevrolet, was originally published in the August 20, 1909 Indianapolis Star. It was part of the coverage of the first auto races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that began the previous day.
Chevrolet has been setting records at the Speedway since the very first day of competition. In this case it was the man, not the car. In the second race of the first day of racing at the Speedway Louis Chevrolet set a new world record for 10 miles on a track at a time of 8:56.40. Chevrolet was having an outstanding year and evidence of that was his Cobe Trophy victory only weeks before the Speedway races.
