Charlotte Board Track Action 1927

Image of The Week
This dramatic shot shows Frank Lockhart on his way to winning a race at the Charlotte Speedway board track. Although the margin note says this image was captured in November 1926, I believe it was September 19, 1927, and this event was one of three contests that day. The great Harry Miller constructed Lockhart's winning Miller race car. Lockhart was a phenom best known for dominating the 1926 Indianapolis 500.
Thanks to the Paul Sheedy Collection for this photo.
Commentary from Bud Miller: "Frank Lockhart was born…April 8, 1903 in Dayton, Ohio…he raced the Boards…22 times…won 8…finished in top 5…14 times..won the Indy Brickyard 500… in 1926…driving a Miller Special…unfortunately…Frank Lockhart lost his life on the Daytona Beach sands..April 25, 1928…blowing a tire ..while trying to set a new Speed Record.…in his Miller-Stutz-Black Hawk race car…he had set a new record of…207.55 on his first run.
