Image of The Week
This is a sketch of driver Cal Niday's entry in the 1955 Indianapolis 500. Cal drove the front engine racer to 16th place in race which was overshadowed by the loss of one of the greatest drivers of all time, Bill Vukovich. Niday, who has the distinction of succeeding in motorsport with only one leg after losing the other in a motorcycle accident in his high school years, survived his professional racing career only to die in 1988 after suffering a heart attack during a vintage car race. Niday was also the first driver to don a Bell Helmet for the Indianapolis 500.
Original art prepared exclusively for First Super Speedway by David Story.
