Barney Oldfield 1915

This image of Barney Oldfield appeared in "The Leader" newspaper (probably from Newark, New Jersey) on March 18, 1915. It is important because it reports on Oldfield's Venice, California 300-mile road race. Too frequently, Oldfield is dismissed as a showman and dirt oval specialist. His victory in this major road race, as well as others, provides a counterpoint that demonstrates his broader range of skills and accomplishments.

Here are additional images from this important Venice race.
