Image of The Week
This image was published in the Indianapolis News on June 7, 1909 as part of their coverage of the national balloon championship hosted at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway two days earlier. It depicts the field of balloons set for competition that day in both the national championship and the handicap race.
The caption to the photo read:
"The picture was taken just prior to the start of the national championship race Saturday. On the left the Chicago is in front, with the Indiana, Hoosier and University City in order. On the right the Indianapolis is in the foreground, with the Ohio, Cleveland, New York and St. Louis III in that order."
