Image of The Week
In this image from the Paul Sheedy collection we see sprint car hall-of-fame driver and Indianapolis 500 veteran Elbert "Babe" Stapp in action at the Legion Ascot track in late November 1927. Legion Ascot is not to be confused with Ascot Park of more recent history. Stapp competed in 12 "500" races from 1927 through 1940, with a best finish of fifth in 1939. Like many racers of the era, Stapp became involved with aviation, joining the Bon MacDougall's bi-plane stunt show, 13 Black Cats.
Yes, the image is blurry, but it is rare and of historical value.
