What you see here is the starting field for the Altoona board track Speedway's June 14, 1924 championship trail race. The winner of that race was the man known as "The King of The Boards," Jimmy Murphy, who also won the 1922 Indianapolis 500 and the 1921 French Grand Prix. This is a hugely historic photo. officials of the American Automobile Association (AAA) appear in the foreground.
Be sure and click thru the attachment link and zoom in. Thanks to the Paul Sheedy Collection for this photo. Sheedy, who managed Altoona Speedway for a time, is the gentleman wearing the white flat hat, second in the line from your right. The renowned AAA flagman and starter Fred Wagner can be seen, second from your left.
