Image of The Week
Thanks to the Paul Sheedy Collection for this photo.
What you see here is the Altoona, PA board track speedway and experts like Chuck Ruddy, Jr. helped me identify this race as the track's September 1, 1924 "Fall Classic." The winner of that race was the man known as "The King of The Boards," Jimmy Murphy, who won the 1922 Indianapolis 500 and the 1921 French Grand Prix.
As for the cars identified in the image, starting from the pole position, we see #16 is R.L. "Red" Cariens (Miller), #10 is Ernie Ansterburg (Duesenberg), #3 is Bennett Hill (Miller), #4 is Harry Hartz (Miller), Antoinne Mourre is #32, #5 is Tommy Milton (Miller), L.L. Corum is next, #8 is Fred Comer (Miller), with Peter DePaolo beside him. The final four drivers are Jerry Wonderlich, Joe Boyer, Bob McDonogh, and Harlan Fengler. It is important that you note that this is the race in which Boyer suffered a horrific accident. He succumbed to his injuries the following day.
