1924 Indianapolis 500 Winner(s)

This is another great perspective piece from artist David Story. This outstanding sketch captures an image of the Duesenberg that won the 1924 Indianapolis 500. This race is known as the first of two "500's" with co-winning drivers. Lora L. Corum started the race in the car but was replaced by the team's star driver, Joe Boyer, after the latter's car failed. The other co-winners were Mauri Rose and Floyd Davis in 1941.

For legibility, the following is the text David wrote in the margin to his art:

"The 1924 running of the Indy 500 was different from the norm. It had two winners or rather co-winners of the race. Lora Corum and Joe Boyer reigned as co-winners of the 1924 race. Both men were on the same team, racing for Fred and Auggie Duesenberg. Joe Boyer's car suffered from mechanical problems early in the race. His teammate Lora Dorum pulled into the pits on lap 111. The car was running fourth. Fred and Auggie made the decision to change drivers. Boyer made up ground fast. He took the lead on lap 177 and stayed there until he got the checkered flag. The record shows that Lora Corum was a co-winner with Joe Boyer of the 1924 Indy 500. Yet Corum never led a single lap of the race or any other Indy 500 race. The same record also gives Joe Boyer as one of the winners of the 1924 Indy 500 and also shows he finished in the 18th spot. Sir Stirling Moss' father raced in the 1924 Indy 500 finishing 16th. Alfred Moss raced in the 1924 Indy 500 finishing 16th. Alfred Moss came to Indianapolis ostensibly to study 'advanced dentistry' but his primary motive was to compete in the 500-mile race. When he returned to England his plan was to continue racing, but a flourishing dental practice all but ended those dreams."
