In the practice days leading up to the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup newspaper coverage was plentiful as reporters looked for angles to localize event news relevant to their communities. A good example was when Indiana-born eye physician, Dr. J. Ray Newcomb took a demonstration ride with great American hope entry, the Locomobile of driver Joe Tracy.

Do you know what a brassard is? Let's just call it a fancy arm band. Our favorite example is the Remy Brassard, awarded with a trophy by the Remy Magneto Company at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in special sprint races they entitled in 1909 and 1910.

One of the major issues of auto racing during the first decade of the 20th century concerned stock cars, purpose-built racing machines (called "freaks") and the rules of governance pertaining to them. Make no mistake, there was never a time in the history of the sport when more manufacturers were involved in fielding teams. The market was very young and really a hot mess of competition as players elbowed their way into the national conversation.

Little-known driver Bruce Keene wrecked his Marmon racer during the tragic Wheeler-Schebler Trophy race during the first weekend of auto racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in August 1909. This accident occurred 30 minutes after the devastating crash of Charlie Merz' National - an incident that claimed the lives of two spectators and his mechanic, Claude Kellum.

The first airplane came along about 17 years after the first automobile, so in some ways the two forms of mechanized transportation have grown up together. One of the big challenges of adapting the automobile to everyday life was that the infrastructure of roads and highways - especially in America - were simply not designed for them.

This article may not appeal to auto racing aficionados but it will to historians. There is a difference. Regardless, First Super Speedway's commitment to both groups is to paint the picture of the times, the early heady days of auto racing. This helps everyone understand the decisions and bets people of the day made as noted in the historical record.
