This item was originally published in the May 30, 1911 Indianapolis Sun. In the early days of automobile racing newspapers constantly sensationalized their coverage with reminders that the sport was very dangerous and drivers and their riding mechanics frequently were killed. This item includes the images of four drivers: David Bruce-Brown, Bob Burman, Harry Grant and Louis Chevrolet.

As part of the citywide celebrations of the opening of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to motorized competition in August 1909, dozens of motorcyclists gathered at Monument Circle in the heart of downtown Indianapolis on August 12 to launch a parade throughout the city. While these motorcyclists were not the competitors from the Speedway, the machines were still such a novelty they could draw a crowd.

I found another of the Indianapolis newspapers' editorial cartoons about the challenges of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in its earliest day. This cartoon challenges the notion that the economic boost the Speedway allegedly promised the Hoosier capitol amounted to anything that the ordinary citizen would benefit from. This editorial was published in the August 25, 1909 Indianapolis Star.

In honor of the MotoGP race this upcoming weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I thought I would note my feature story for last year's MotoGP program. For fun, check out this great primary research source that was one of the more helpful pieces I used to develop the story.
