I found this gem on YouTube - in-car camera point of view with five-time Formula One Champion Juan Manuel Fangio. The shots are said to be from 1957 which means the car is a Maserati.

The Delta Wing IndyCar concept has generated a lot of conversation, and not surprisingly as it easily is the greatest departure from convention. Marshall Pruett of Speed TV wrote an informative editorial on the subject which dives deeper than a lot of the superficial assessments we have seen thus far.

I came across some nice footage of the 1931 Indianapolis 500 won by Louis Schneider and thought I would share...

I wasn't going to write anything today about making history, but I did dash Curt Cavin, the auto racing editor of the Indianapolis Star an observation about how the Delta Wing concept was unveiled. His response motivated me to file this post.

The Delta Wing concept car unveiled yesterday in Chicago has already accomplished one thing: it generated a lot of conversation among the IndyCar faithful. Unfortunately, I don't think the buzz permeated the collective conscious of anyone that doesn't already follow the sport. Even more unfortunate is that it has been met with, at best, mixed reviews.

Two silent film clips flagged by Brian Pratt of the Yahoo Auto Racing History Group offer some unique images of board track racing in the United States during the 1920's. Anyone with any idea where these films were taken, please comment. The first film demonstrates the dazzling speed of these cars that must have made for an exciting show.

As chassis designers release images and information about their proposals for the 2012 IndyCar formula it generates discussions among fans. Those I have heard from are largely underwhelmed. This is not to discredit the engineering effort and sincerety of the vendors - Swift, Lola, Dallara and the Delta Wing project - or the Indy Racing League. Overwhelmingly I hear that the issue is not which vendor has the most stylish concept, but that no matter how appealing it is having everyone use the same thing is less than exciting.

As chassis suppliers propose their approaches to the Indy Racing League (IRL) to win their business in defining the new IndyCar formula in 2012, Lola, a legendary name that can boast three Indy 500 wins has put their ideas on the table. While Lola has a marvelous history in many forms of motor racing and there is every reason to believe they would fulfill the objectives defined by the League, there is a larger question about vendors in general.

I thought I'd pass along another great race car photo site I came across. The site is for Can-Am Cars Ltd., but there appear to be as many IndyCars as Can-Am. Most of these are machines from the 1950's through the 1990's. Some of the more interesting IndyCars are: a 1951 Kurtis Kraft 4000, the 1964 Jerry Eisert rear engine racer and a 1970 Kingfish. Most of the pictures are in color. These are cars that have been restored and some are are for sale.

As I mentioned yesterday, I am beginning a series of "Making History" blog posts. The great Indianapolis 500 stands on a threshold, not just because it is about to begin its second 100 years, but because various market factors have entirely reshaped the world around it. Among the numerous factors is the proliferation of niche sports that have splintered the marketplace as well as interactive technology that has pulled potential customers into video games and social networking. Another factor that has not been discussed adequately is the maturity of the automobile as a product.
