Thanks to auto racing historian Chuck Rudy for sharing this information about Philadelphia's "Belmont Driving Park." It's a great snapshot in time to recall a long forgotten auto racing venue.

The cultural divide between oval and road racing in the United States is generally recognized but not fully explored. This is especially true with its implications for today's Indianapolis 500 with respect to the cars and drivers that participate. Something occurred to me years ago in my work with Vanderbilt Cup historian and "Black Beast" race car owner - and that's the schism I am referencing traces back to the sport's earliest days.

This is worth a bookmark. Get to know Ray Harroun's relief driver in the first Indianapolis 500, Cyrus Patschke, just that much better...

This guy is a hugely interesting story. Good on him. The Chili Bowl is finally getting serious scrutiny and the idea of prevailing over 300 competitors is daunting - truly a major achievement.

First, I want to thank Paul Pfanner and the gang at RACER Magazine for allowing me to offer my perspectives on the future of IndyCar - and what needs to be done now to right the ship.

Okay, so this is a stretch but I will make the analogy anyway. I think most people are aware there is a "think local" marketing movement underway today and especially with respect to our food supply. This development was never more obvious to me than when I visited nearby (to me) Asheville, North Carolina last summer. Anyway, on to my analogy.

Thinking back more than 100 years to the massive affect of the proliferation of the automobile and the industry that supported it - and continues to - you have to be intrigued by its 21st Century evolution. People in the "car hobby" of restoration - at least more than a few of them - are of the opinion that autos since the 1990's when integrated circuitry (IC) increasingly became more of the content of the machine that newer model vehicles will be harder and harder (impossible?) to restore.

Okay, I've said it before and I'll say it again. A study of history is essential to anticipating the future. It just seems inevitable to me that driverless, networked vehicles will dominate the roadways in coming decades.

I came across this great summary on the passings of racers and car culture luminaries from Hemmings. More outstanding work from this magazine.

I love history, I love auto racing and I love envisioning the future. Understanding history, I think, is essential to imagining what's going to happen next. A lot of things are going to happen to our driving (or should I say "automobile interfacing") experiences as a result of GPS and In-Vehicle Information (IVI).
