Image of The Week
This is a curious item I found in the January 8, 1908 Indianapolis News that is evidence that some sports writer might have been a frustrated poet. As with any New Year the media of the day reflected on the previous year. In this instance the author was reviewing auto racing events of 1909 that he found most significant. I have provided links to original coverage of each of these events, all of which include additional links to biographical information on the drivers listed in bold.
In chronological order, the are:
- New Orleans where Ralph DePalma and Joan Cuneo starred.
- Cobe Trophy won by Louis Chevrolet.
- The tragic and historic opening of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
- The Lowell road race won by George Robertson.
- The Riverhead race on Long Island where Chevrolet and DePalma prevailed.
- Fairmount Park where again Robertson proved his mettle.
- Ralph Mulford's triumph at Brighton Beach where he established new 24 hour speed records.
- The Vanderbilt Cup won by Harry Grant.
- The big Atlanta race meet where Lewis Strang and Louis Chevrolet grabbed headlines.
- The frigid December speed trials that tested the newly brick-paved Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
