Oldfield Wins in Chicago - 1906

This is a brief article that summarizes a race meet at the Hawthorne dirt track near Chicago. Barney Oldfield is credited with winning an event that involved three heats. A.C. Webb is noted as having finished to Oldfield in one of the heats.

It is also noteworthy that there was a 100 mile race at the race meet but Oldfield did not compete. This reflects his general attitude toward racing at the time. To his way of thinking it was too risky and Oldfield did everything within his power to control the situations he put himself into and minimize the danager he exposed himself to. He also was a showman and knew how to keep his name in the forefront to attract an audience, and, in term, command great compensation.
